Dry Eye Isn’t Just for Post-Menopausal Women

Dry Eye Isn’t Just for Post-Menopausal Women

Case Study: Meet HG, a 38-year-old welder who came to our clinic for his annual eye exam. He’s long been troubled by irritation, burning, watering, and a gritty feeling in his eyes. His SPEED questionnaire score of 16/28 highlights the extent of his symptoms.

🧐 Key Findings:

- Diagnosis: Floppy Eyelid Syndrome, a moderate pterygium in the right eye, and severe Meibomian Gland Dysfunction.

- Current Management: HG had been using artificial tears a few times daily, but they haven’t been enough to ease his discomfort.

- Clinical Exam: Fluorescein staining revealed grade 1 superficial punctate keratitis (SPK), and meibography showed severe meibomian gland loss (see attached images).

With HG’s lifestyle and unique risk factors, we’re designing a treatment plan that aims to bring lasting relief to his eyes. Our goal is to help him achieve both comfort and ocular health long term.

Conclusion:

Dry eye isn’t just a postmenopausal issue; it’s a condition that can affect anyone. As eye doctors, we should consider every patient a dry eye suspect until proven otherwise. Let’s redefine our approach to ensure comprehensive care for all.
